None of us reach adulthood without experiencing hurtful things that leave an imprint on our hearts and minds. When we face those experiences without comfort or guidance, we may develop beliefs about ourselves, others, God, or life that feel true but aren't true from God's perspective. I call these beliefs “lies.”
For example, a child who is bullied may believe, “I'm weak.” Someone expected to be perfect may believe, “I can't make a mistake.” A person who grows up caring for everyone else may believe, “It's not okay for me to have needs.” And someone who has experienced sexual abuse may believe, “It's my fault” or “I'm unworthy of genuine love.”
These beliefs can affect our relationships and contribute to shame, insecurity, anxiety, sadness, anger, or resentment that persists into adulthood.
